The Scarafaggio Peeler is a concept kitchen tool designed for the Alessi brand. Inspired by biomimicry, the project explores how organic forms can improve ergonomics while turning an everyday object into a sculptural, expressive product. The goal was to align functional performance with Alessi’s design language—where utility and emotion coexist

Design Exploration

Early concept sketches inspired by beetle anatomy. The peeler head is based on mandibles, while the body draws from an exoskeleton form to create a palm-fitting, ergonomic grip. Iterative head-shape and ergonomic studies led to the integration of a 360° rotating mechanism to improve usability

Prototype Testing

A visual overview of the tape-up prototype being tried out on different produce, from papayas to potatoes. These hands-on tests helped check the ergonomic grip and see how well the peeler adapts to different shapes and sizes
